What is it about Graduations?

“I don’t know of any other gatherings that are as purely positive as a commencement address. Think about it.  Weddings, well some people are happy but others are not. Family reunions nothing but trouble…”

Billy Collins Poet Laureate, said in his remarks at Lehman College.

Sometimes the speeches at graduations can be long and… (yawn) but something about the Keynote speaker was different.

Success occurs when preparation and opportunity intersect . Lowell Hawthorne adds a very special award to his long list of impressive achievements. Graduating with his Bachelor of Business Administrator he is no longer a college dropout

Lowell Hawthorne’s long list of accomplishments was impressive however one sentence in the introduction made my ears perk up and I listened intently to every word he said.

Stepping to the podium his rich and confident voice rings out…

“To say that I am elated to be here today would be inadequate

To explain the exhilaration I feel gazing out at the pride and joy from the faces of loved ones

As I come to terms with the fact that I too am numbered among this year’s graduates… the commonly used term college dropout has haunted me for over twenty years. It’s one of the labels I decided I was not going to accept or be defined by for much longer.”

key-to-success

One of the keys to success is the self-image says Herbert Harris. In his book, The Twelve Universal Laws of success, he explains,  ” Self-image is how you see yourself in your own eyes . It is the mental and emotional pictures you hold in your consciousness of who you are what you are, and what you represent.”

In an interview with Holistic PR Andrea Adler she explains in more detail …“most people are playing too small they are trying to understand their life from a limited perspective.” One tool she recommends is meditation. Meditation quiets the mind.

The more you practice to quiet your mind and open your heart you will experience the truth, eloquently stated by Anna Freud “I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence, but it comes from within, it is there all the time.”
